“Morning At MOG”
Its not official nor on any map but “Planet Chihuly” is real.  Extending roughly from the Tacoma Art Museum to the end of Thea Foss Waterway,  Planet Chihuly it is an area of unprecedented urban renewal, a renewal steeped in the arts.  From the restoration of Union Station, to establishing the UW Tacoma campus turning back the urban decay of lower Pacific Ave, to the bold design of the Museum of Glass complex on a Superfund site, to the striking 21st Bridge, every aspect of this renewal is rich in aesthetic value.

When I first came to live in the downtown area several years back I found myself thinking ... I can’t believe I’m really in Tacoma.  Downtown Tacoma has indeed come a long way in the past ten years in part due to the art and patronage of its favorite son:  Dale Chihuly.  Certainly Chihuly is not the only force driving this renewal but in a symbolic way he has.  Chihuly’s support, real or imagined, has in a sense forced Tacoma to consider the arts in all aspects of this revitalization.  Whether it is the restoration of classic old structures, new residential buildings or the like, a nod to the aesthetic element is always there… it is a requirement on “Planet Chihuly”.

This series of 5 photos focuses on the Museum of Glass area.  I selected these photos primarily because of their “other worldly” qualities demonstrating in the extreme the aesthetic aspect of Tacoma’s renewal and the idea of “Planet Chihuly”.
